Account Book Advertising Stamp

This stamp would have been used like tape for wrapping paper, in this case for the products purchased there. The stamp was produced by Hochlehnert & Co., Ulm a. D. Hochlehnert & Co. were also an account/ledger book "factory", printer, and paper wholesaler.

More decorated papers from Deutsche Einbandkunst, 1921

I recently acquired 2 more copies of the catalog to Deutsche Einbandkunst edited by, and also with an article by, Ernst Collin. Why more copies, well the catalog was produced in two versions, a deluxe of twenty unbound copies on handmade wove rag (I-XX), with the remaining copies (21-2,000) on a machine-made wove rag paper. My copy of the deluxe edition (Nr. XX) was bound in an unsigned ¼ leather binding with cloth sides and gilt top edge. It is the regular edition copies in their decorated  paper wrappers made or provided by ten different decorated papermakers.

Copy # 852, paper made by Theo Paul Hermann, Leipzig.
This is a printed paste paper (Kleisterdruck)

Copy # 921, paper made by Anne-Marie Irmler, Berlin.
An expressionistic stenciled paper, "schabloniertes Papier."
She is mentioned in an article that appeared in the Papier-Fabrikant,
a paper trades publication. (749-750)

Not going to make a habit of aquiring more copies unless the papers really grab me... 😂

Deutsche Einbandkunst, 1921

Ernst Collin edited and published Deutsche Einbandkunst, the catalog for the Jakob Krauße Bund's (J-K-B) exhibition that was held in the Weißer Saal of Berlin’s Schloßmuseum September-October 1921. The catalog featured essays by Ernst (2), Paul Kersten (2), G.A.E. Bogeng, and others. Ernst’s essays were “Wer ist ein Bücherfreund” (“Who is a Bibliophile”) and the uncredited “Über Bucheinbände” (“About Bookbindings”) describing the various structures hand bookbinders applied and what viewers would encounter in the exhibit. Other essays provide context to the J-K-B of which Kersten was director and other aspects of the exhibit such as bindings by Jakob Krauße drawn from various libraries. Displayed bindings are minimally described in the checklist that is divided into several parts: Deceased members Georg Collin (12), Eduard Ludwig (15), Fritz Nitsch (1) and active members including Otto Dorfer (24), Paul Kersten (42), Otto Pfaff (14), and Hugo Wagner (12). In total, there were several hundred bindings and other works. The catalog also contains forty pages of advertisements for antiquarians and booksellers, binderies, printers, and purveyors to the trade. Ernst wrote several articles about this exhibition in other publications for the book trades and general public.

The catalog was produced in two versions, a deluxe of twenty unbound copies on handmade wove rag (IXX), with the remaining copies (21-2,000) on a machine-made wove rag paper. My copy of the deluxe edition (Nr. XX) was bound in an unsigned ¼ leather binding with cloth sides and gilt top edge.

Of interest is that the decorated wrappers for the regular edition were made by ten different decorated paper makers. Below some examples

The pastepaper example illustrated above from my collection (Nr. 1887)
was made by Xaver Wittmann, Abt. B.B.K., Konstanz a. R[hein]
who provided 200 pieces.

I was recently able to acquire two more copies of the catalog with different decorated papers for the wrappers.

Help [Hübel & Denck] Advertise!

"A good book is the best friend and helper anytime!," "read books, knowledge is power!," and "give books at every occasion!" Hübel & Denck, based in Leipzig was one of Germany's largest trade binderies, binding everything from notebooks to literature, including very high end specialty work. The image is from their house journal that published articles about typography, design, bookbinding, collecting, ...

From Hübel & Denck's "Monatsblätter für Bucheinbände und Handbindekunst," vol 2, nr. 12, 1925-26.

Each of the issues in the journal had it's own unique style that included the paper, typography, graphic elements, and samples of materials. More about those later.

Advertising for Binderies, 1910 and 1918

Just came into several issues of the Zeitschrift für Bücherfreunde, n.F., spanning the years 1910 - 18. Some wonderful advertising for binderies and binders I've shared here and seen in other places, so perhaps more fodder for future posts. You can find most of these binderies on the Buchstadt | City of the Book, Leipzig, 1913 map.

Advertising | Werbung 1929

I love this old advertising and its visual flair. In this installment we go from board shears to animals ending with a glue on the basis of fish. All images from the 1929 volume of the Allgemeiner Anzeiger für Buchbindereien.

Looking for an affordable board shear? Only RM 370 from Krause in Leipzig.

Syndetikon "sticks, glues, fixes everything." It was invented by Otto Ring in 1880 and was made on the basis of fish glue... The ads below were created by Friedrich Wilhelm Kleukens. Its time ended with the death of Ring and the advent of synthetic / solvent based adhesives in the 1930s. These also had the advantage of not smelling like fish...

There's more about Syndetikon and its inventor Otto Ring in this German article from the Spiegel that has many more images, most in color.

Okt. 1924, halbwegs unten hier. Hier zur Mommsenstraße 27 bei Google Maps.

My new copy of the Heftlade also had ads bound in at the back. Among them, for Ernst Collin's Corvinus-Antiquariat and for the Euphorion Verlag that published the Pressbengel. It was interesting to see that Collin was also seeking books on Free Masonry. Was he also a Mason? See also another add for his Antiquariat in the catalog for the Ausstellung handwerklicher Einbandkunst im Museum des Güstrower Kunst- und Altertumsvereins: 21. Sept. bis 15. Okt. 1924halfway down the page here. Here's a view of Mommsenstraße 27 via Google Maps

Books for the Bibliophile
We have: first editions, rare books, letterpress and luxury editions,
and books in beautiful bindings

Wanted are books by/about the following including free-masonery,
first editions...

The Euphorion Verlag, publisher of Collin's Pressbengel translated by me as The Bone Folder, had two ads on this page. The top indicated that it was looking to buy back all out-of-print titles it published and asking for offers (and prices). At bottom, an ad for the Pressbengel, indicating it as vol 5 in a series of essays on the topic of the care and handling of modern book art. There is also a description of the deluxe edition of 30 copies that could be ordered in either full-leather or parchment. Could this one from the Max Hettler collection be one of these? There, it is stated that the binding was by Hübel und Denck – Collin wrote numerous articles for their Festschrift Fünfzig Jahre deutscher Verlegereinband, Festschrift Hübel u. Denck, Leipzig, 1875 - 1925 and the monthly Monatsblätter für Bucheinbände und Handbindekunst.

Below the pricing for the Pressbengel, leather or parchment for 85 Marks, paper for 4.50 Marks. This was during the period of hyper-inflation so need to do some real math as hyperinflation currency was printed at ever greater denominations (see below). A website that converts historical currency values calculated that 85 Mark (1922) has a value of $3931.93 current dollars, and 4.50 Mark (1922) $208.16 current dollars. Can that be right?

How many of these bills of Notgeld (Hyperinflation currency) would have been needed in 1923?

Friedrich Meink, Berlin

Just acquired another bound volume of Die Heftlade, a "modest" journal published by Ernst Collin for the Jakob-Krause-Bund 1922-24. Very glad I acquired this as it mentioned that the two issues of Vol 2, 1924 were bound in, as well as being described as missing only one of the inserts. My original copy of this journal only included vol 1, had water damage, and was missing most inserts... Still, considering that it had been published in an edition of 400 copies a rare find - essential for the Ernst Collin collector/bibliographer.

One of the inserts was this beautiful logo for the bookbinder Friedrich Meink from Berlin. While have not been able to find a binding image, like many of his peers, Friedrich Meink also wrote articles and essays that appeared in journals and exhibit catalogs. An example of the latter was the essay, "Die Zunftsprache des Buchbinders" ("The Trade Language of  Bookbinders") that appeared in the catalog Ausstellung Handwerklicher Einbandkunst im Museum des Güstrower Kunst- und Altertumsvereins - 21. September bis 15. Oktober 1924 that Ernst Collin also wrote an essay for. The catalog indicated that Meink exhibited a binding on Collin's Pressbengel.

Below two items from Die Heftlade – the first Meink's logo, the other an advertisement for his bindery in Berlin. The woodcut is by Friedrich Schult in Güstrow.

Meink advertised his workshop for hand bookbinding as producing simple and fine bindings in leather, parchment, linen, and paper with hand-tooling, leather and inlays and mosaic, and Batik. Also portfolios, mats, and the restoration of old bindings.

At the same address is the Lette Verein, a technical school originally just for women where Paul Kersten and Maria Lühr taught bookbinding. The Lette Verein was founded in 1866.

Pharma and Ernst Collin

Advertising by pharmaceutical companies is everywhere, offering self-diagnosis and remedies, we just need to ask our doctor. In Buch und Werbekunst (Vol 2, nr 11, 1935) Ernst Collin wrote about advertising for these pharma products in German AND English, the first bilingual article I found.
Advertising of Pharmaceutics
(Ways and Means of Propaganda for Pharmaceutics.
Advertising through Supplements in Medical Publications.)
By Ernst Collin

When advertising the products of the pharmaceutical industry it .is necessary to take into account that advertising for the public and advertising for medical circles are two entirely different things, as adverse to one another as water and fire. The fact must not be forgotten when approaching the public direct through newspaper advertisements, despatch of prospectus, and other means that possibly the medical man will on principle refuse to prescribe the remedies concerned. It is, of course, not always possible to draw the line sharply. Lately advertising for the public has been carried out for a number of well known preparations, which the medical man can hardly avoid prescribing, these are chiefly preparations for alleviating pain, or strengthening the entire organisation....

I discovered the reference to the article in the footnotes to a doctoral dissertation, Kurt Hilscher – Werbegrafik und Verlagsarbeiten - 1925-1975,  from 2008 while Goggling.

W. Collin Stelleninserate - Help Wanted Ads

Mehr W. Collin Stelleninserate aus der Berliner Volkszeitung

More W. Collin help wanted ads from the Berliner Volkszeitung

As reported here, it had been a long time since I last searched through the daily newspaper collections in the European Library and ZEFYS, so during a day off from work I decided to spend it looking at a screen... It seems that since I last looked in mid-2015, that a lot more content had become available online, most notably for me in the Berliner Volkszeitung. The articles and help wanted ads were found searching the full-text content, but as often happens with these older typefaces, the OCR left something to be desired. For that reason, I'm sure that there are still numerous ads and articles related to W. Collin to be found.

W. Collin War Production - Kriegsproduktion

In the post War Production - W. Collins "Affe" back in April of 2015, I shared my find of a military pack made by W. Collin. Ernst Collin had written several article on the impact of the First World War on binderies, so it was nice to now have a direct connection to that war effort in the form of that pack. I was also able to show an image of a military belt made by W. Collin in my history/bibliography, The Collins.

It had been a long time since I last searched through the daily newspaper collections in the European Library and ZEFYS, so during a day off from work I decided to spend it looking at a screen... Why should it be different from any other day... It seems that since I last looked in mid-2015, that a lot more content had become available online, most notably for me in the Berliner Volkszeitung. My primary interest was searching for more article by Ernst Collin who had been on the the editorial board of that publication and served as an art critic... Glad I looked, 69 articles on art exhibits, artists, and related topics. I also, of course, searched for W. Collin and found a number of job ads, including some from 1914 related to war production...

In this series of classified ads, it was interesting to see the name of Rudolf Mosse appear several times. Mosse was a publisher (incl. the Berliner Volkszeitung), advertiser, and philanthropist. From these ads I would guess that his publishing plants were also pulled into the war effort. Like the Collins he was also Jewish.
